High-voltage masts are usually equipped with an earth rope at the tip, in order to discharge the current into the earth via the mast base, for example, in case of lightning strikes. Therefore, all masts are grounded not only via their mast base, but also in parallel via the Earth cable with all other masts. A measurement of the respective master earthing according to the 3-pole procedure would therefore only be possible if the earth cable was interrupted —a time-consuming and dangerous matter.

With the C.A 6472 and the Pylon Box C.A 6474 — of a vector processing unit for up to 4 flexible current transformers AmpFLEX —, earthing measurements on voltage masts with earthing cable are possible at any time, in operation and without interruption. To that Up to 4 flexible current transformers AmpFLEX are placed around the base of the mast and the measurement of the earthing resistance — and also the impedance with a sweep frequency signal with up to 5 kHz — is done without any problem and without any risk. The flexible AmpFLEX current transformers enable measurements on masts of the most varied design.

All the essential parameters can be determined with just one measurement:

• Total impedance of the cable
• Earth resistance of the relevant mast
• Resistance of each mast base
• Chain impedance over the earth wire
